Updates to Infusion Auditing
Unit-dose Reconciliation Solution for Epic Customers
ControlCheck is beta launching Infusion auditing for a set of Epic customers
With this release, we are making a change to how dispense, admin, and return events are captured for continuous infusions. For these Epic hospitals, events will be able to auto-reconcile with unit-dose reconciliation. For example, if a user dispenses a continuous drip product and documents a New Bag action on the patient's eMAR, then we will display 1 unit
for each event and auto-resolve the case. If there is no corresponding admin or return for a given dispense, then we will display a variance of 1 unit
for that case. This logic will be applied to any events for medication identifiers mapped as a continuous infusion in ControlCheck, regardless of whether the admin amount was documented as a rate (e.g. 50 mcg/hr) or in mass (e.g. 1000 mcg).
For example, take a look at this raw admin event for a fentanyl continuous infusion.
The provider documented a New Bag at 16:37 for the fentanyl drip. This information crossed into ControlCheck as 1 unit
dose given and auto-resolved as Closed-Bluesight with the dispense of the infusion product, as seen below.
Updates to Package Sizes for Mapped Infusion Medications
Based on the analysis of close rates for infusion meds in Patient Care auditing, we are making an enhancement to how we process infusion medications in the application. ControlCheck will automatically update all mapped Infusion medications to have a package size of 1 unit
so that events auto-reconcile even for continuous infusion products that have variable concentrations and package sizes.
Epic customers’ source system medication identifiers can continue to be mapped to infusion medications with a package size of 1 unit
. This change is intended to streamline infusion auditing so auditors can easily see when a bag was dispensed and when the infusion rate was documented at the patient's bedside.
With this release, all medications mapped as infusions (Audited and Not Audited meds) will have their Package Size automatically updated to 1 unit
.
This information was shared with Epic sites that currently have mapped infusions through an in-app notice from 1/26-2/5/23 and again from 3/18-3/27/23.
Disabling Infusion Auditing for Non-Epic Customers
In order to ensure a high-quality customer experience, we’ve made the decision to disable infusion auditing for non-Epic customers. We look forward to partnering with Cerner and Meditech customers in the near future to learn how we can best support visibility into infusion data for customers using those source systems.
With this release, the currently mapped Infusion meds in their ControlCheck Formularies will be unmapped and moved to the Ignored Medications tab. Their source system med IDs can be remapped from that list to another form factor if they wish to continue auditing that med ID.
This information was shared with non-Epic sites that currently have mapped infusions through an in-app notice from 3/17-3/27/23.
System Benchmarks Enhancements
The System Benchmarks reports have been enhanced to allow a user to set their filters prior to initiating a search so that they don’t have to wait for a default date range to load first. The Documentation Accuracy and Time to Admin and Waste reports would previously load the last three months of data by default, putting the user in an unavoidable waiting queue before even indicating the desired date range. With this release, we are introducing a View Report button to allow a user to initiate their search before the application tries to load or return any data.
To view data in the Documentation Accuracy or Time to Admin and Waste report, select a date range and click View Report.
This enhancement to the System Benchmarks reports will greatly improve the user experience but that’s not all we have in store! Users have reported getting stuck behind long wait times when trying to access the data they need from the reports so we are making some changes to how we query for this data. With some additional upcoming enhancements, users will be able to quickly access the benchmarking data they need from these reports and make informed decisions that can positively impact patient care.
Overall, the reduction of query wait times will lead to increased efficiency and productivity for users while using the System Benchmarks reports.
Updates & Fixes
- Fixed an issue with duplicate events created by a file processing issue.
- Fixed an issue with the session timeout pop-up that asks users Are you still there? while they are actively working in the application.
- Fixed an issue with the sort of Average Mass per Event not sorting correctly on the IRIS Analytics Med Trends report.
- Fixed an issue with the ES ID on the Audit cards being a hyperlink and opening the ES ID in a new tab. The ES ID on this page can now be easily copied and pasted.
